The Ultimate Fall Deep Cleaning Checklist for Houston Homes

By JVS Home Cleaning ·

Houston does not get a dramatic autumn, but the shift from brutal summer humidity to milder fall air is still the best window of the year to deep clean. Temperatures drop enough to open windows for a few hours, hurricane season is winding down, and the holiday season, along with houseguests, is right around the corner. Use this checklist to reset your home room by room before November arrives.

Start With Air Flow: Vents, Returns, and Filters

After a Houston summer of running the AC nearly nonstop since April, return vents, supply registers, and ceiling grilles collect months of dust that gets kicked back into the air every time the system cycles. Fall is the right time to pull registers off the wall and vacuum both the vent cover and the duct opening a few inches in, wipe down the return grille, and replace the HVAC filter if it has not been swapped recently.

  • Vacuum supply and return vent covers, then wipe with a damp microfiber cloth
  • Check and replace the HVAC filter
  • Wipe down the thermostat and any visible ductwork near the unit
  • Note any musty smell near vents, which can signal moisture in the ductwork worth having checked

Tackle Windows, Screens, and Sills After Storm Season

By mid-October, Houston is usually past the worst of hurricane season, which means it is a good time to give windows their first real cleaning since spring. Screens trap pollen, dust, and storm debris, and sills collect grit that gets tracked in every time a door opens.

  • Remove screens and hose them down or scrub with a soft brush and mild soap
  • Wipe window tracks and sills with a damp cloth before drying them
  • Clean interior glass with a lint-free cloth to avoid streaking
  • Check weatherstripping and seals while you are at it, since gaps let in humidity and pests

Reset Soft Surfaces: Carpets, Rugs, and Upholstery

Carpets and upholstery hold onto months of humidity-trapped dust, pet hair, and everyday grime. A thorough vacuum pass with attention to edges and under furniture, followed by spot-treating any stains before they set further, keeps allergens down heading into the drier part of the year.

  • Vacuum slowly in multiple directions to lift embedded dirt, not just surface dust
  • Rotate or flip couch cushions and vacuum underneath them
  • Spot-clean upholstery stains with a fabric-safe method before they become permanent
  • Shake out or deep-clean area rugs, especially ones near entry doors

Pantry and Cabinet Refresh for Fall

With cooler weather bringing more baking and holiday cooking, fall is a practical time to clear out the pantry, check expiration dates, and wipe down shelves before they fill back up. Wiping cabinet interiors now also catches any grease film that has built up over the year before it hardens further and becomes harder to remove.

Do Not Forget the Outdoor Living Spaces

Many Houston households use their patios and porches well into fall. Hose down outdoor furniture, sweep patios and walkways, and clear gutters of the leaves and debris that storm season left behind so water drains properly instead of pooling near the foundation.

A fall deep clean does not need to happen in a single weekend. Spreading this checklist across a few days keeps the task manageable and gets your home holiday-ready while Houston's weather is actually cooperating.
