Deep Cleaning Your Kitchen for Holiday Baking Season

By JVS Home Cleaning ·

Holiday baking season asks a lot of a kitchen that may not have seen this much continuous use since last December. Between cookies, pies, and holiday meals, the oven, counters, and storage areas all get pushed harder than usual. A deep clean before the baking starts means more usable counter space, an oven that performs the way it should, and less scrambling mid-recipe to deal with mess that built up over the year. It also means less cleanup squeezed in between batches, since the kitchen is already starting from a genuinely clean baseline.

Start With the Oven

An oven that has not been deep cleaned in a while can affect baking results, not just appearance. Built-up grease and food residue can smoke or create odd smells at high temperatures, which is the last thing anyone wants during a batch of cookies.

  • Run a self-cleaning cycle if the oven has one, ideally a few days before heavy baking begins so there is time for it to fully cool and be wiped out
  • If cleaning manually, remove racks and soak them separately while scrubbing the interior with an oven-safe cleaner
  • Check and clean the oven door glass, since built-up grease here makes it harder to check on bakes without opening the door and losing heat

Clear and Deep Clean Counters

Baking requires real workspace, and cluttered counters are one of the biggest obstacles to a smooth baking session.

  • Clear counters of anything not needed daily, temporarily relocating small appliances that are not part of the baking lineup
  • Deep clean countertop surfaces, including under appliances that normally sit in place year-round like toasters or coffee makers
  • Wipe down backsplash areas near the stove, which tend to collect splatter that gets overlooked during routine cleaning

Reorganize the Pantry and Baking Supplies

Nothing slows down a baking session like hunting for an ingredient buried behind unrelated items.

  • Group baking staples like flour, sugar, and extracts together so they are easy to find and restock
  • Check expiration dates on baking powder, baking soda, and spices, since these lose effectiveness over time and affect results
  • Wipe down pantry shelves while they are temporarily more accessible from pulling items out to check dates

Clean the Refrigerator for Overflow

Holiday baking and cooking often mean more dough, dairy, and prepped ingredients than a normal week, which can strain refrigerator space fast.

  • Clear out expired or unused items to make room before holiday ingredients start arriving
  • Wipe down shelves and bins, since spills from butter or eggs are more likely during a busy baking stretch
  • Designate a shelf or drawer specifically for baking ingredients so they are not competing for space with everyday groceries

Don't Forget the Sink and Dish Area

Baking generates dishes fast, and a sink that is already clean and clear makes cleanup between batches far less of a bottleneck. A quick deep clean of the sink basin, along with clearing out any dish rack clutter, keeps the whole process moving smoothly from one recipe to the next.
